For most people, the most important factor they consider when purchasing a mattress is how comfortable it is. Of course, you must also consider price. Some people may opt to purchase a smaller mattress in order to save a little money; however, downsizing can seriously affect quality of sleep. When choosing between Twin, Full, Queen, King, and California King mattresses, consider the following:
How much space you have: Even if your ideal mattress size is a King, you may have to make do with something smaller if your bedroom cannot accommodate a large mattress. Also consider the size of the entrances to your bedroom—you may have the floor space for a California King but it has to fit through the door first!
Who will share the bed: It may go without saying, but you’ll likely need a larger mattress if you share your bed with a partner. Think beyond your spouse or significant other, too. Do you have small children who may need your comfort some nights? Do you have pets who like to cuddle? Going a size up may be the best choice if there is even a chance that you’ll be sharing your mattress.
What your body type is: If you are taller or heavier-set, you will probably be more comfortable in a Queen- or King-sized mattress. If you are more petite, you may be perfectly comfortable in a Full or Twin. The best way to determine whether you will be comfortable on a specific size of mattress is to lie on one for about 20 minutes. If you have a sleeping partner, be sure to include him or her in this test-drive.
Finally, consider your personal comfort. If you don’t necessarily need a large new mattress but enjoy the space to stretch out, you’ll be happiest with what makes you the most comfortable.
