Your mattress is your sanctuary—but what if it’s been breached by bed bugs? Bed bugs feed on blood and their bites can cause a number of health problems, both physical and psychological. If you can identify with any of the following signs, it’s time for a new mattress!
Itchy Bites The most common health risk that comes with bed bugs living in your mattress is the itchy, red bites they inflict. Often, their bites appear arranged in a line or cluster on the arms, hands, neck, and face. Many people only experience a slight itching sensation, but some have been known to have more severe allergic reactions to bed bug bites, causing blisters, hives, and serious itching and skin irritation. In some cases, allergic reactions can result in anaphylaxis, requiring immediate and professional medical treatment.
Blood Loss Although rarer, in cases of extreme infestations or those affecting small or malnourished children, high rates of bed bug feeding and bites can result in significant blood loss. This can lead to other medical problems, including anemia. Although the human body can replace lost blood, sustained high rates of bed bug bites over time may require medical intervention.
Emotional Distress Although not a physical health risk, emotional distress can be a very real result of bed bug bites. You want to consider your bedroom a safe, healthy place to sleep, and a bed bug infestation can cause severe emotional distress when your home no longer seems safe, interfering with the sleep you need. Once the infestation has been professionally addressed and the bed bugs exterminated, consider replacing your mattress and other bedding as an added deterrent to bed bug recurrence and for improved peace of mind when you sleep.
