How to Choose the Perfect Pillow for Your New Bed

Last updated 6 years ago

Now that you’ve picked out your new mattress, it’s time to furnish your bed! Besides sheets and a good comforter, you’ll also need quality pillows. Pillows are important for a good night’s sleep, so give your selection a bit of thought. If you don’t know exactly what to look for, here are some tips to help you pick out the perfect pillow for your new bed:

Consider any health conditions you may have. Do you have allergies? Nothing ruins sleep more effectively than allergies. If you wake up with itchy, watery eyes; a runny nose; and a cough, you may be allergic to the down feathers in your pillow. If you have allergies, consider choosing a pillow that is hypoallergenic.

Think about how you sleep. What kind of pillow you should get depends on how you normally sleep. For example, if you sleep on your back, consider a thinner pillow to avoid neck pain. If you’re a side sleeper, a firmer pillow may be in order—it will fill in the distance between your ear and your outside shoulder. If you like to sleep on your stomach, you may not even need a pillow for your head, but get one to tuck under your stomach to avoid back strain. If you still want a pillow for your head, get a very thin, flat one.

Determine what level of softness you prefer. Different pillow fillings have different levels of softness. Cotton and wool pillows are quite firm and hypoallergenic. Down pillows are soft yet firm enough to give you comfort and support. Memory foam pillows are popular because they reduce pressure points by adjusting as you move throughout the night.
