Pillows: What You Need to Know

Last updated 6 years ago

The pillow that you choose can make as much of a difference in the way you sleep as your mattress. Just like your mattress, your pillow is supposed to help your body find its proper alignment. For this reason, it is important to choose a pillow based on how you sleep. Keep reading to learn the best way to choose a pillow that gives you proper support as you sleep:

When You Sleep on Your Back

If you primarily sleep on your back, you need a pillow that will brace your neck. Pillows that are too full or not full enough will put your neck at an awkward angle, causing discomfort. Medium-sized pillows will allow you find the correct head position. A Tempur-Pedic mattress will also relieve pressure on your lower body.

When You Sleep on Your Side

As long as you are properly supported, sleeping on your side is one of the best sleeping positions for your neck and spine. Find a pillow that allows you to keep a straight line from your head to your spine. Ask about special side-sleeper pillows that will work in conjunction with your mattress. You might want to also consider putting a pillow between your knees to keep your entire spine aligned.

When You Sleep on Your Stomach

If you find that sleeping on your stomach is the most comfortable position, you need a thin, soft pillow, as stomach sleepers should not try to elevate their heads. Sticking to a thin pillow will prevent your head and neck from moving at an unnatural, uncomfortable angle that hinders your sleep.
